Why the Deccan Queen Express doesn’t stop at Kalyan?
Kalyan! A crucial junction on the Central #Railway ! An important station connecting #Mumbai to North and South #India! Any long-distance train usually stops at Kalyan! But one train doesn’t stop at Kalyan at all, and that is the “Queen of the Deccan,” the “Deccan Queen”! This train, which runs from Mumbai to #Pune, doesn’t stop at Kalyan. Surprised, aren’t you? Rightly so!!
The reason is that the railway used to pay a #tax to Kalyan Municipality for running trains through the Kalyan Municipal limits. But later, for some years, the railway didn’t pay that tax to the municipality. This angered the Kalyan Municipality, and they took the railway to court. The court ruled in favor of Kalyan Municipality, and the municipality seized the engine of the Deccan Queen. Railway officials came the next day, paid the tax, and only then did the Kalyan Municipality return the Deccan Queen’s engine, which they had seized and kept in their custody for one night.
The railway did not forget this insult and disgrace, and they decided never to stop the Deccan Queen at Kalyan!
The lawyer who effectively represented Kalyan Municipality in this case was Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar!!
