अदानींवरील आरोपांमुळे दस्तरखुद्द पंतप्रधान वादाच्या भोवऱ्यात

भारतातील उद्योगपती गौतम अदानी (Gautam Adani) यांच्यावर घोटाळ्याचे गंभीर आरोप करणाऱ्या हिंडेनबर्गने आता थेट मार्केट रेग्युलेटरी सेबीवर खळबळजनक आरोप केला आहे, त्यामुळे भारतीय अर्थविश्वाला हादरा बसलेला आहे. या प्रकरणात दस्तरखुद्द पंतप्रधान नरेंद्र मोदी हेही या कटाचा एक भाग आहेत, असा आरोपही विरोधी पक्षाकडून केला गेला. त्यामुळे हे प्रकरण अधिक तापण्याची शक्यता निर्माण झाली आहे.

अमेरिकन शॉर्ट सेलर फर्म हिंडेनबर्गने त्यांच्या रिसर्चमध्ये सेबीच्या अध्यक्षा माधवी बुच (Madhabi Puri Buch) व त्यांचे पती धवल बुच (Dhaval Buch) यांची अदानी यांच्या बनावट परदेशी कंपन्यांमध्ये भागीदारी आहे, असा आरोप केला. त्यासंबंधीची कागदपत्रेही सादर केली गेली. या अत्यंत संवेदनशील प्रकरणाची पंतप्रधान किंवा अर्थमंत्री कार्यालयाला माहिती नव्हती, अशी तिळमात्रही शक्यता नाही. किंबहुना या प्रकरणात या कार्यालयांतील वरिष्ठांचा बुच दाम्पत्यांना ‘अर्थ’पूर्ण आशीर्वाद असण्याची शक्यता वर्तवली जात आहे. त्यामुळेच पंतप्रधान नरेंद्र मोदी हेही या कटाचा एक भाग आहेत, असा आरोप विरोधी पक्षांतील नेत्यांनी केला आहे.

अदानी यांच्यावरील हा गौप्यस्फोट हिंडेनबर्ग करणार होते, असे त्यांनी अगोदरच जाहीर केले होते. त्यामुळे विरोधी पक्ष मोदी सरकारला धारेवर धरणार, हे उघड होते. त्यामुळेच संसदेचे अधिवेशन अगोदरच गुंडाळण्यात आले.

पंतप्रधान नरेंद्र मोदी सत्तेवर येताच गौतम अदानी यांची अफाट प्रगती झाली. विशेषतः कोरोनाच्या काळात तर त्यांची संपत्ती इतकी वाढली की, ते जगातील पहिल्या ३ क्रमांकाच्या यादीत आले. मात्र त्यानंतर हिंडेनबर्ग अहवाल प्रसिद्ध झाला त्यानंतर त्यांचे हे स्थान कमालीचे घसरले. यानंतर ‘स्प्राऊट्स’ने Gautam Adani- King of Frauds या नावाने वेगळाच रिपोर्ट (दिनांक: ३१ जानेवारी २०२३) प्रसिद्ध केला, तो प्रचंड व्हायरल झाला.

शनिवारी रात्री हिंडेनबर्गने रिपोर्ट (Hindenburg Research ) सादर केला. त्यात म्हणले आहे की, बुच आणि त्यांच्या पतीची अदानी यांनी केलेल्या मनी सायफनिंग घोटाळ्यात वापरलेल्या ऑफशोर फंडात भागिदारी होती. त्यामुळे सेबीने इतक्या मोठ्या घोटाळा प्रकरणात कोणतीही कारवाई केली नाही. विशेष म्हणजे त्यांना या घोटाळ्याची इत्यंभूत माहिती होती. त्यांनी याप्रकरणी कारवाई करण्याऐवजी हिंडेनबर्गलाच नोटीस पाठवली होती.

अदानी यांच्यावर यासंबंधी सर्वोच्च न्यायालयात केस चालू होती, तेव्हाही सेबीच्या बुच यांनी न्यायालयाला दिशाभूल करणारी माहिती दिलेली होती, त्याआधारेच न्यायालयाने अदानी यांना क्लीन चिट दिली होती, अशी माहितीही ‘स्प्राऊट्स’च्या स्पेशल इन्व्हेस्टीगेशन टीमच्या निदर्शनास आलेली आहे. सर्वोच्च न्यायालयाने ही केस रिओपन करण्यात यावी व चौकशीसाठी एसआयटी स्थापन करण्यात यावी, अशी मागणीही विरोधी पक्षाने केली आहे.

माधवी बूच यांची सेबीच्या अध्यक्षपदावरून त्वरित हकालपट्टी करण्यात यावी. इतकेच नव्हे तर मनी लॉन्ड्रींग करणाऱ्या बूच व त्यांचे पती धवल यांच्यावर आर्थिक गैरव्यवहार प्रतिबंधक कायद्यातर्गत (PMLA act ) चौकशी करायला हवी. यासाठी ED व सीबीआय (CBI ) यांनी विशेष तपास करायला हवा, मात्र या प्रकरणाशी पंतप्रधान किंवा अर्थमंत्री कार्यालयाचा संबंध असण्याची शक्यता आहे, त्यामुळे हे प्रकरण ‘मॅनेज’ होण्याची शक्यता अधिक आहे.

अदानी यांचा मीडियातही दबदबा

हिंडेनबर्गने केलेले हे सर्व आरोप अदानी, सेबी, बूच व त्यांचे पती यांनी फेटाळले आहे. आजही प्रिंट, इलेक्ट्रॉनिक व सोशल मीडियात अदानी यांची दहशत आहे. त्यामुळे सर्वत्र हिंडेनबर्गने केलेल्या साधार आरोपांची बातमी फारशी प्रसिद्ध झाली नाही. मात्र केवळ अदानी व बुच यांचे खुलासे सर्वत्र प्रसिद्ध होत होते.

धारावी रिडेव्हलपमेंटचे काम काढून घेण्याची मागणी

अदानी यांना धारावी पुनर्विकासाचे (Dharavi Redevelopment) कंत्राट देण्यात आले आहे. हे कंत्राट त्यांना नियमबाह्य पद्धतीने देण्यात आले आहे. सध्या त्यांची आर्थिक स्थिती नसल्यामुळे ते धारावीचा पुनर्विकास करण्यास समर्थ नाहीत, त्यामुळे हे कंत्राट त्यांच्याकडून काढून घेण्यात यावे, अशी मागणी ‘स्प्राऊट्स’ व इतर स्वयंसेवी संस्थांकडून करण्यात आलेली आहे.

अयोध्येतील जमीन घोटाळ्याचे गौडबंगाल

अयोध्या हे तर प्रभू रामचंद्राचे जन्मस्थान आहे. येथे मिल्ट्रीची १३ हजार ३९१ एकर जागा आहे. सैन्यदलासाठी ही जमीन राखीव आहे, मात्र सध्या राममंदिरामुळे अयोध्येचा भाव वधारला आहे. त्याचाच फायदा घेवून वरिष्ठ सरकारी अधिकाऱ्यांनी यातील जमीनी या योगगुरु रामदेवबाबा (Ramdevbaba), श्री श्री रविशंकर यांच्यासह गौतम अदानी यांना विकल्याचा घोटाळाही उघडकीस आला आहे, यासंबंधीची महत्वाची कागदपत्रे ‘स्प्राऊट्स’च्या टीमच्या हाती लागलेली आहेत.

‘स्प्राऊट्स’नेही दिला होता इशारा

३१ ऑक्टोबर २०२१ रोजी ‘स्प्राऊट्स’ या मुंबईतील विश्वासार्ह दैनिकाने अदानी उद्योगसमूहाविषयी सविस्तर रिपोर्ट सादर केला होता. या स्पेशल रिपोर्टचे शीर्षक होते ‘Adani’s financial misadventure, Adani to fall back upon NAMO’. अदानी यांनी SBI सारख्या सरकारी बँका व LIC सारख्या सार्वजनिक कंपन्यांमधील सामान्यांच्या ठेवींवर कसा डल्ला मारला, व त्यासाठी कायदे कसे पायदळी तुडवले गेले, याविषयीचा साधार रिपोर्ट साधार केला होता, मात्र त्याकडे सरकारने जाणीवपूर्वक दुर्लक्ष केले होते.

Hindenburg puts PM in the line of fire

Narendra Modi looked away as Madhabi Buch left a blatant trail of her fraudulent dealings in Adani’s offshore entities, before and after she was appointed as SEBI chief

Only months after the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance government assumed power at the Centre for a third term, Prime Minister Modi has a target on his back. And firing the bullets is Hindenburg Research, the US-based whistleblower that specialises in forensic financial research.

Eighteen months after it alleged that Indian businessman, Gautam Adani, was operating the “largest con in corporate history”, Hindenburg has cast its net wider. Late on Saturday night, the organisation claimed that Madhabi Puri Buch, head of India’s stock market regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), was a part of Adani’s fraud operation.

Hindenburg said it had evidence that Madhabi and her husband Dhaval had a substantial stake in Mauritius-based, obscure offshore entities being used by Gautam Adani and his brother Vinod, to siphon billions of dollars from India and reroute them into the country. The original Hindenburg Report had also accused Adani of “running a secret shell empire” to prop up the stocks of his companies “through a network of sham investment entities”.

The revelations against Adani and Buch have stirred a political storm, drawing Modi into its vortex. The Opposition claims the Prime Minister is part of a cover-up to protect his friends, Adani and Buch. ‘Sprouts’ also asks: wasn’t Buch vetted before she was appointed to head SEBI? The market regulator is overseen by the Union Finance Ministry and Buch was appointed as a Whole-Time Director of SEBI in 2017. Her appointment as SEBI Chairperson was made is 2022. Buch obviously has friends in the highest of places, for she made no attempt to cover her tracks in her dealings with the offshore funds in question for seven years!

Adani – ‘VIP Fraudster’

After Modi first came to power in 2014, Adani’s wealth soared, and he was soon among the wealthiest in the world. However, when the Hindenburg Report was released 18 months ago, it led to a dramatic decline in Adani’s wealth. At the time, ‘Sprouts’ released its own report (January 31, 2023) titled ‘Gautam Adani – King of Frauds’, which went viral.

Adani has since recovered lost ground, with a Supreme Court inquiry giving him a clean chit. The ‘VIP fraudster’ was let off the hook in January 2024, after Buch, as SEBI Chairperson, submitted a report to the apex court, clearing Adani of stock market manipulation. That’s laughable, as Buch has made a mockery of transparency and accountability within the country’s top market regulator. And the two fraudsters have been working together.

‘Madhabi Buch must resign immediately’

Opposition leaders are now baying for blood. They are urging the Supreme Court to reopen the case against Adani and also investigate Madhabi Buch and her husband. They are also demanding that the government set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT), and a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) be established to probe the allegations against Adani and Buch.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra says Madhabi Buch should resign without further ado. The Opposition is demanding that Buch and her husband Dhaval be investigated under the Prevention of Financial Misappropriation Act (PMLA Act). In addition, the full weight of the Enforcement Directorate, a tool that has been willfully used by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party against political detractors, should be brought to bear on the SEBI chief.

Unfortunately, in Indian political circles, the rot runs deep. With a ‘Supreme leader’ at the helm of what has been described as an ‘oligarchy’, we can only hope the Opposition makes some headway.

Adani also dominates the media

Hindenburg’s allegations have been denied by Gautam Adani, SEBI, Madhabi Buch and her husband, and the matter was soon ‘forgotten’ by the Indian media. This was due to Adani’s stranglehold over the print and electronic media, as well as social media. Not surprisingly, the statements of the accused have been prominently headlined but the shocking revelations of Adani’s fraudulent offshore dealings and their impact on the Indian stock market have been downplayed by the media, or not published at all.

Demand for withdrawal of Dharavi redevelopment

Gautam Adani has been awarded the contract to redevelop Asia’s largest slum, Dharavi, despite allegations that the allotment process was not transparent. This, even though the Adani Group lacks the financial prowess to execute this mammoth project. Therefore, ‘Sprouts’ and NGOs are demanding that this contract be reassigned.

Goudabangal land scam in Ayodhya

Ever since the BJP-led government built the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, religious tourism has soared and land prices have gone through the roof. With a fortune up for grabs in real estate in this temple town, politicians, bureaucrats, industrialists and other vested interests are set to make a killing from 13,391 acres of land. While the land in question is reserved for the military, there is a ploy to sell it to Baba Ramdev, the Indian Yoga guru notorious for his business interests; spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, also known for his business interests; and Gautam Adani, notorious for the “largest con in corporate history”.

‘Sprouts’ had also given a warning

On October 31, 2021, ‘Sprouts’ published a detailed report on the Adani Group. Titled ‘Adani’s financial misadventure, Adani to fall back upon NAMO’, the special report revealed how Adani had siphoned the common man’s deposits from nationalised banks such as the State Bank of India and public sector companies like LIC. It also revealed how laws had been trampled upon to achieve these ends and how the government had ignored the financial scam.
